Community Tutoring Program
The Program
The St Leo’s Community Tutoring Program (CTP) is part of the College Literacy and Numeracy program and assists our Year 7-8 students who need that ‘bit of extra help’ to achieve their full potential through basic literacy and/or numeracy support.
- St Leo’s Community Tutoring has been running successfully for many years and has seen significant improvements in the confidence and learning outcomes of students
- The program runs three strands of support: Reading, Writing and Numeracy
- Sessions run on Thursdays during school Terms in Periods 1 and 2 (8.30-10.30am) or Periods 3 and 4 (11.25am -1.25pm).
- Each session has approximately 8-10 tutors working one-on-one with students, focussing on one of the above strands in a shared learning space
- Generally, in Terms 1 and 2 our focus is on Year 8 students, and Term 3 and 4, Year 7.
Our Tutors
We have an amazing and diverse group of volunteers who come from all walks of life and backgrounds. Some have a connection to St Leo’s, while many do not – however all find working with the students and seeing them grow in ability and confidence very rewarding.
- Tutors range from tertiary students through to retirees and come from a wide variety of careers and backgrounds
- Only basic (primary school level) reading, writing and mathematics is required
- No experience is necessary – full training is provided and a teacher is always available to assist during tutoring sessions
- Tutors can assist on a temporary, ongoing or casual basis
- A Working With Children Check clearance is needed, or willingness to obtain one.
Expressions of Interest – Can you Help?
We are looking for interested adults of any age or background who are available to volunteer as little as one or two hours per week on Thursdays during school Terms.
- Term 4 2024: Due to current tutors being unavailable for several weeks in Term 4, we are urgently seeking a volunteer to work in our Numeracy strand in Periods 3-4 (11.25am-1.25pm) on Thursdays for Weeks 1-4 in Term 4 (17, 24 & 31 October and 7 November)
- 2025: We are currently also planning our Program for next year and looking to add temporary, ongoing and casual tutors to assist as the program continues to grow.
If this sounds of interest and you are available for as little as one or two hours per week on Thursdays, please don’t hesitate to enquire. We would love to hear from you and tell you more about this wonderful program!
