A NAIDOC WEEK FEAST🪃| To conclude our NAIDOC Week celebrations yesterday, a hungry and adventurous group of students participated in our 'Deadly Dishes' taste testing event, giving them the opportunity to explore traditional foods connected to some of the many First Nations peoples across Australia.![]()
Invited to take part based on their meaningful and respectful engagement with NAIDOC Week activities this week, participants were able to taste test kangaroo, crocodile and emu meat. Meanwhile, all students were offered lemon myrtle biscuits to try, showcasing some of the many native Australian ingredients and their significance.![]()
Students embraced this experience with enthusiasm, curiosity and respect, creating a positive opportunity to celebrate culture, learn new perspectives and develop a deeper appreciation of First Nations food traditions.![]()
A huge thank you and congratulations to St Leo's HSIE teacher and Wiradjuri woman, Ms Melissa Vernon for organising and running such an interesting and educational range of activities this week for our students.
NAIDOC WEEK ACTIVITIES | As NAIDOC Week fell during the school holidays this year, we held our own St Leo's NAIDOC week this week with a range of activities in mentor classes and breaktimes.![]()
This year's theme, '50 Years of Deadly', celebrated five decades of recognising and honouring the achievements, strength and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.![]()
One of our feature events this week was a traditional Aboriginal art workshop for a selected group of students, led by Darkinjung artist Claudia McCartney. We were privileged to have Claudia, who shared her personal connection to art, explaining how she learnt from her family and the meanings behind traditional Aboriginal symbols. Guided by her knowledge and expertise, students created their own reflective artworks, approaching the experience with respect, enthusiasm and creativity.![]()
A huge thank you to Claudia for sharing her culture, stories and artistic talents with our students, helping to make our NAIDOC Week celebrations so meaningful.
